Global Privacy Officer and VP in Compliance

Miami, FL

Helen serves as the Global Privacy Officer and Vice President in Compliance at Global Medical Response, the global leader in emergency services and patient relocation services. In this role, Helen is responsible for the oversight, development and maintenance of the organization’s Privacy Program. She works closely with the Chief Compliance Officer, executive leadership team, and authorized enforcement agencies to ensure adherence to laws, regulations, policies and procedures that govern GMR’s operations. Helen is highly skilled at implementing strategies and techniques to build and maintain privacy and compliance programs with special attention to the rapidly evolving landscape of privacy and healthcare related standards, laws and regulations. She is considered a leader in the fields of data privacy & integrity, data innovation and ethical management of data and technology.

 

Helen has over 20 years of experience in practicing healthcare law and data and technology leadership. Most recently, she was part of the executive leadership team as the Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer at Nicklaus Children’s Health System, a nationally recognized healthcare system exclusively for children. Prior to that, Helen served as a senior executive leader at the University of Miami, presiding over data privacy, integrity, and security strategy. She held the roles of Data Privacy Officer at the University of Miami and Chief Privacy and Data Integrity Officer at the University of Miami Health System. In 2018, she became one of the first institutional data privacy officers in higher education in the United States.

 

The first part of her career was spent as a first chair litigation attorney as a partner with the law firm of Fowler White Burnett P.A. As a the practice group leader of the Healthcare Group, she represented health systems and hospitals in both litigation and regulatory proceedings, and assisted healthcare systems, institutions and practitioners in complex, high value lawsuits. Helen has a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Miami School of Law. She is a Fellow of the American Bar Association. Ms. Blake is an “AV rated” attorney, the highest level awarded her peers through Martindale-Hubbell and is included in the Martindale-Hubbell Register of Preeminent Health Lawyers and National Register of Preeminent Woman Lawyers.

Jean is an Assistant General Counsel in the Privacy, Safety, and Regulatory Affairs division of the Microsoft legal department. She joined Microsoft in 2023 as part of the Nuance Communications, Inc. acquisition. Immediately prior to its acquisition, Jean served as Nuance’s Vice President, Chief Legal, Compliance and Privacy Officer where she led the global legal department and implemented the strategy for data privacy practices designed to ensure customer and business data are strictly governed and privacy is maintained.

 

Jean has 30 years of experience leading compliance and privacy programs, successfully managing data incidents including regulatory investigations, and implementing best practices for data governance and risk management across multiple industries. Prior to her tenure at Nuance, she served as Chief Privacy Officer, Assistant General Counsel, and Director of Regulatory Compliance at Multiplan, a health insurance services provider. Jean previously held senior legal positions at R1 RCM, U.S. Foods, and Aon Corporation.

She has spent most of her career in the music industry, working for the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, overseeing the planning of high-profile events like the JUNO awards. Most recently, she launched a successful national advocacy campaign for the live music sector resulting in significant relief funding from the federal government. 

 

Her early career involved raising funds and executing events for non-profit organizations and foundations, including the University of Toronto and the Ireland Fund of Canada. Brenna looks forward to her role as Forum Director to blend her experience and passion for bringing people together and fostering meaningful connections. 

 

She is a mother of two, a fitness enthusiast, and is best known for her sense of humour.
